Most passenger cars enter the country through the Freeport of Monrovia, the country’s major seaport. Car dealerships and importers play a critical role in the market. Notable dealerships include West Africa Trading Corporation (WATCO), United Motor Company, and Modern Auto Sales, which specialize in importing, selling, and sometimes servicing new and used vehicles. These companies often offer financing options, which make vehicle ownership more accessible.

Car ownership in Liberia is still limited to a relatively small portion of the population, mainly urban residents and professionals. In rural areas, poor road conditions and low purchasing power reduce the demand for passenger cars. However, the government and NGOs are key buyers of new cars for official and humanitarian work.

Vehicle financing remains a challenge due to high-interest rates and limited access to formal banking services. However, some banks and microfinance institutions have begun to offer car loans, which may help boost new car sales in the future.

The government has made efforts to regulate the automotive sector through agencies such as the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) and the Ministry of Transport. These bodies handle vehicle registration, import duties, roadworthiness certifications, and enforcement of traffic regulations.
