India garment industrys

India’s garment industry is one of the largest and most significant sectors of the country’s economy, playing a crucial role in employment, exports, and GDP contribution. As of 2025, the Indian garment industry is valued at over $100 billion and continues to grow due to strong domestic consumption and increasing global demand. The sector includes a wide range of products such as casual wear, formal wear, ethnic wear, sportswear, and fashion garments for men, women, and children.

India is the world’s second-largest textile and apparel producer after China. It benefits from a robust raw material base, especially cotton and jute, and has a large pool of skilled and semi-skilled labor. The country is home to thousands of small and medium-sized garment manufacturers spread across major textile hubs like Tirupur, Ludhiana, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bangalore. These hubs specialize in different segments – for example, Tirupur is known for knitwear, while Ludhiana is famous for woolen garments.

India exports garments to over 150 countries, including the United States, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. The industry contributes significantly to India’s export earnings, with apparel exports accounting for around 40% of the total textile exports. Leading Indian garment companies like Aditya Birla Fashion, Raymond, Arvind Limited, and Fabindia have also established strong brand identities both domestically and internationally.

Government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for textiles, the PM MITRA scheme for integrated textile parks, and subsidies for technology upgradation have further strengthened the industry. The rise of e-commerce platforms like Myntra, Flipkart, and Amazon India has provided garment businesses with new sales channels, enabling even small manufacturers to reach wider audiences.

Challenges faced by the industry include rising input costs, competition from low-cost producing countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam, and the need to adopt sustainable practices. However, with continued innovation, a focus on quality, and expansion into value-added segments like organic and eco-friendly clothing, India’s garment industry is well-positioned for sustained growth in the global fashion landscape.
