Food manufacturing industries in Belize

Belize, a small Central American country with a population of just over 400,000, has a growing food manufacturing industry that plays an important role in its economy. The sector focuses mainly on the processing of local agricultural products and the production of food for both domestic consumption and export. Despite being a developing nation, Belize’s food manufacturing industries are gradually expanding through investments in technology, food safety standards, and market diversification.

One of the most prominent areas in Belize’s food manufacturing is the sugar industry. Sugar production has long been a key part of the country’s economy, especially in the northern regions such as Orange Walk and Corozal. Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI), now majority-owned by the international company American Sugar Refining Inc. (ASR), dominates sugar processing. The industry produces raw and refined sugar and molasses, much of which is exported to Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States under trade agreements.

Another major industry is citrus processing, mainly in the Stann Creek and Cayo Districts. Citrus Products of Belize Ltd. (CPBL) is the primary processor of oranges and grapefruits, turning them into juices, concentrates, and essential oils. Citrus juice from Belize is a key export product, especially to the Caribbean and North America. However, the industry has faced challenges in recent years due to plant diseases and declining fruit yields, prompting efforts to modernize processing facilities and improve crop management.

Seafood processing, particularly of farmed shrimp and wild-caught lobster and conch, is another important sector. Belize has developed a reputation for sustainably farmed seafood, and several local companies are certified for export to the European Union and the U.S. The shrimp industry, in particular, contributes significantly to export earnings, although it has also faced challenges such as disease outbreaks and environmental concerns.

Coconut and other tropical fruit processing is a growing industry in Belize. Several small and medium enterprises produce virgin coconut oil, dried fruit, jams, sauces, and juices. These products are sold both locally and in regional markets. The availability of high-quality tropical fruits year-round gives Belize a competitive edge in producing natural and organic food products.

Belize also has a baking and snack food industry, focused on supplying bread, pastries, biscuits, and chips for local consumption. Companies like Bowen & Bowen and other small manufacturers are involved in beverage production, including soft drinks, purified water, and beer. Bowen & Bowen also produces the popular Belikin beer, the country’s national brew.

While Belize’s food manufacturing industry is relatively small, it shows potential for growth, particularly in the areas of organic and value-added products. With improvements in infrastructure, training, and market access, the sector can significantly contribute to employment, rural development, and foreign exchange earnings.
