Namibia’s cosmetics industry is relatively small but growing steadily, driven by local entrepreneurship, natural resources, and increasing demand for organic and indigenous products. The country’s unique biodiversity, including plants like marula, kalahari melon, and omumbiri (Commiphora wildii), plays a key role in cosmetic formulations. While Namibia may not have a vast number of large-scale cosmetics manufacturers, several notable companies and cooperatives are making their mark by combining traditional knowledge with modern cosmetic science.

One of the most well-known companies in the Namibian cosmetics sector is Namib Desert Jojoba Oil Producers (Pty) Ltd., which specializes in the production of jojoba oil—a key ingredient in skincare products. Their products are primarily exported, but they also supply local cosmetic manufacturers with high-quality natural oil.

Another significant player is Desert Secrets, a Namibian brand that produces natural body care products using indigenous plant ingredients. They are known for creating handmade lotions, soaps, body butters, and oils derived from locally sourced materials like marula, kalahari melon seed oil, and omumbiri resin. Desert Secrets is also actively involved in empowering local communities by sourcing raw materials from women’s cooperatives, especially in the Kunene Region.

Eudafano Women’s Cooperative is another notable name in the Namibian cosmetics ecosystem. Based in northern Namibia, this cooperative works with thousands of women who collect marula fruit and kernels. The cooperative processes marula oil, which is then sold locally or exported to cosmetic companies globally. This initiative not only supports the cosmetic industry but also contributes to community development and sustainable natural resource use.

Katutura Cosmetics, a newer entrant, focuses on urban-based cosmetics production, targeting the growing local market. They offer a variety of beauty and skincare products, often inspired by local needs and preferences. This brand is helping create awareness of Namibian-made beauty products among younger consumers.

Namibia’s government and non-governmental organizations have shown growing interest in supporting the natural cosmetics sector. Initiatives promoting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly those that use indigenous resources sustainably, have led to more entrepreneurs entering the market. Organizations like the Namibia Network of the Cosmetics Industry (NANCi) have been instrumental in supporting local producers with training, branding, and export readiness.

Despite its relatively modest scale, Namibia’s cosmetics manufacturing sector is promising. With an increasing global demand for organic and sustainable beauty products, Namibian brands have the potential to carve a niche by emphasizing natural ingredients and ethical production practices. As infrastructure, research, and marketing continue to develop, more local brands are expected to emerge, offering both domestic and international markets a unique range of products rooted in Namibia’s rich natural heritage.
