Guatemala’s garment industry is one of the most important sectors of the country’s economy, providing thousands of jobs and contributing significantly to exports. The industry began to grow rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly as Guatemala became integrated into global supply chains. Today, the garment sector remains a major source of employment, especially for women, and a key part of the country’s manufacturing base.

Most of Guatemala’s garment factories are located in and around Guatemala City and other urban areas such as Mixco and Villa Nueva. The industry includes both maquiladoras (assembly plants focused on exports) and local manufacturers. Garments produced in Guatemala include T-shirts, pants, uniforms, undergarments, and activewear. A large portion of the output is destined for export, particularly to the United States, which is Guatemala’s main trading partner under trade agreements like the Dominican Republic–Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR).

Major international brands have sourced products from Guatemala due to its proximity to the U.S. market, skilled workforce, and improving infrastructure. Additionally, the country has been focusing on adopting better labor standards and sustainability practices to remain competitive. Companies in Guatemala have invested in certifications and compliance programs to attract ethical buyers and ensure worker safety and fair labor practices.

Despite its strengths, the industry also faces challenges. Competition from Asian countries with lower production costs has put pressure on Guatemalan manufacturers. Moreover, political instability, crime, and fluctuating economic policies have also impacted investor confidence. However, initiatives by the government and private sector to improve competitiveness, increase productivity, and promote innovation continue to support the industry’s resilience.
