Electronics manufacturing companies in Uganda

Uganda’s electronics manufacturing industry is still in its early stages but shows promising growth potential. The country is gradually developing its capacity to locally assemble and manufacture electronic devices, driven by both domestic demand and regional trade opportunities. Several companies, supported by government initiatives and foreign partnerships, are beginning to play a significant role in this sector.

One of the leading players in Uganda’s electronics manufacturing landscape is Simi Mobile, also known as Engo Holdings Group Limited. Launched in 2019, Simi Mobile is the first company to assemble smartphones and feature phones in Uganda. The company operates a factory in Namanve Industrial Park, where it assembles phones under the brand name “Simi.” These locally assembled phones aim to provide affordable mobile devices to the Ugandan and East African markets. The company is a joint venture between the Ugandan government and Chinese investors and has become a symbol of Uganda’s ambitions in high-tech manufacturing.

Another important contributor is Mutooni Technologies, a Ugandan company focused on providing hardware and software solutions, including assembling computers and offering IT-based services. While it is not a large-scale manufacturer, Mutooni Technologies plays a key role in developing Uganda’s technical capabilities by providing custom electronics and innovations for local needs.

Pearl Computers is also involved in assembling and selling computing devices in Uganda. It partners with regional and international companies to deliver affordable computers, laptops, and IT infrastructure. Though its scale is smaller compared to international brands, its role in providing local assembly services is noteworthy.

Government initiatives like Skilling Uganda and Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) have helped promote local manufacturing and assembly of electronics. Through partnerships with foreign investors, the Ugandan government encourages technology transfer and local job creation. The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance also supports programs aimed at increasing local capacity to produce and maintain electronics.

In addition, Uganda’s growing startup ecosystem is giving rise to hardware innovators who create devices for agriculture, healthcare, and education. For example, Kiira Motors Corporation, though primarily focused on electric vehicle production, also engages in electronics and mechatronic systems manufacturing. Their research and development efforts contribute to the electronics sector more broadly by training engineers and developing prototypes that integrate digital technologies.

Despite these positive developments, Uganda’s electronics manufacturing sector faces challenges such as high costs of raw materials, limited access to advanced technology, and dependence on imported components. Nonetheless, ongoing investments, government backing, and regional demand position Uganda to gradually strengthen its presence in this field.

In summary, Uganda’s electronics manufacturing industry is still developing but holds great promise. Companies like Simi Mobile and Mutooni Technologies, along with government programs, are laying the foundation for a future where Uganda could become a regional hub for affordable and innovative electronics production.
